Yasujiro Ozu Retrospective at New York Film Festival

If you are in New York, try and get to Lincoln Center this month for some of Ozu's films; the retrospective is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the film director's birth. The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice is showing this week. One of the most powerful films I have ever experienced, this hard-to-find film is a subtle yet emotionally explosive exploration of a married couple's relationship. Spanning four decades, Ozu's work, like the best ethnographic studies, consistantly explore human emotional life with patience and honesty, yet are filled with the detail and precision only fictional cinema enables.
